9th JAMESON BELFAST FILM FESTIVAL ANNOUNCES DOCUMENTARY LINE-UP >

TUESDAY 3RD MARCH 2009
Last week, the Jameson Belfast Film Festival announced the documentary programme for its 9th annual film festival.

44 documentaries, from experimental to cinema verite in form, participate in almost every section of the festival programme: the 4th Maysles Brothers Competition, Panorama (out-of-competition), Truth/Memory/Transition (debate and discussion), special events, Twisted Cornea (experimental), Same Sex Cinema, New Irish Cinema and Sound and Vision (music documentary).

Highlights include the 4th year of the Maysles Brothers Competition, platforming excellence in cinema verite filmmaking and innovation in film form or technology. Previous winners were Kim Longinotto for Sisters in Law (UK), Raoul de la Fuente for Nomadak TX (Spain), and Robert Nugent for End of the Rainbow (Australia).

The rest of the programme includes the European Premiere of Pulling John, bringing 1980s arm-wrestling and the cold war back in fashion! World premieres of new Irish and northern Irish documentary, including a night out with legendary Shellshock Rock filmmaker John T Davis, both performing his music and presenting his new film Tailwind.

Our experimental documentaries prove an exciting part of Twisted Cornea this year, with I Love Alaska highlighting issues of privacy and the internet while FLiCKeR mesmerises.

Music documentaries always prove popular in Belfast where both RiP: A Remix Manifesto and Johnny Cash at Folsom Prison suit audience taste and will receive a warm welcome.

Finally, a section of the festival that is extremely important to us, Truth/Memory/Transition, attempts to present and discuss documentary films and their worldwide stories in the context of conflict resolution, managing the emotional impact of history and the flexible nature of memory. This strand centres around debate and Pray the Devil Back to Hell will provide a thrilling centrepiece discussion in the presence of filmmaker and subject as it sits alongside a fascinating discussion about the consequences of fame in politics with world-renowned Northern Ireland civil rights campaigner Bernadette McAliskey (nee Devlin) and the film Bernadette.

In addition, Sheffield Doc/Fest's Charlie Philips and Karolina Lidin will be presenting their MeetMarket and meeting with Northern Ireland factual production companies.
