JOHNNY CASH AT FOLSOM PRISON
Spring & Airbrake
Monday 30th March, 8pm
£6 / £5.50
Johnny Cash at Folsom Prison examines the most important day in the career of one of America’s foremost music artists and exposes a lesser known ‘man in black’ through exciting, visually compelling examination of the concert. It was January 1968, a year that would be saturated in violence and historical change the world over. Cash’s 1968 concert in Folsom State Prison in California and the ensuing album became a symbol of the 1960’s and one of the true great live albums, it was also to transform his career.
SOUTH COAST
Black Box
Friday 3rd April, 7pm
£3
Since the unstoppable rise of Gangsta rap, sexism, homophobia and the rampant pursuit of bling and materialism becoming the norm, mainstream U.S. hip hop has become much maligned. But a new movie coming out of the UK has been overturning preconceptions of hip hop and making waves at screenings around the world from New York, France, Bermuda, Holland and beyond. Featuring artists such as Norman Cook (Fatboy Slim), Dirty Diggers, Beardyman, Kilaa Instinct and many more, the film is a document of not only the music, stories and graffiti art but also an informative piece on where the scene came from in its infancy and where it’s going. It’s a time capsule of hip hop’s original spirit, essence and values.
Who Killed Nancy?
Black Box
Tuesday 31st March, 9pm
£6 / £5.50
On October 12th 1978 Nancy Spungen, an ex-prostitute, stripper and heroin addict, was found dead in a bathroom at the Chelsea Hotel in New York. She also happened to be the girlfriend of the Sex Pistols' bassist Sid Vicious, who was quickly accused of her murder. Less than six months later, he died of a heroin overdose and the case was closed. The death of Sid and Nancy has passed into rock legend and has only added to the controversial and notorious image of the Sex Pistols and punk music. At the request of Sid's mother, who committed suicide in 1996, rock author and punk expert Alan Parker has devoted himself to discovering ‘Who Killed Nancy?’
