One of Ukraine’s most acclaimed films for its magical realism, sumptuous colour and elaborate use of costume, music and staging, Shadows of Forgotten Ancestors remains a remarkable and ambitious work.
It tells an epic tale of life in the Carpathian mountains, where a young man falls in love with the daughter of the man who killed his father. The film was made by Sergei Parajanov (The Colour of Pomegranates), whose life story included being close friends with Andrei Tarkovski, being imprisoned by the Soviet state for his subversive tendencies and experiencing various run-ins with government censors.
For any newcomer as yet unaware of the sheer breadth and richness of Ukrainian cinema, this is a great place to start.
Ukraine Encounters is part of the UK/Ukraine Season of Culture devised jointly by the British Council and the Ukrainian Institute.
