Legendary composer and bass player, Charles Mingus scores this John Cassavetes film about perception of race in 1950s America. Filmed with a camera borrowed from Shirley Clarke and in John Cassevetes and Gena Rowland’s shared apartment. The film was known as a progressive look at race relations in the US, but modern audiences would likely find the casting of a white woman of Italian descent as a black woman part of the Hollywood tradition of whitewashing.
