Linklater’s relaxed and ironic tone depicts a day in the life of Austin, Texas, where a merry-go-round of amateur philosophers, jilted lovers, inept criminals, aspiring artists, and whacked-out conspiracy theorists search for a place to be – post-Reagan lost souls adrift in a sea of shallowness with no direction home. As one character asks a friend, “Do you ever just want to get out of this country?”
