As much as you root for Ila to find true love with Saajan, it is an unexplained excitement to see what she has lovingly packed in the lunchbox meant for her husband each day.

It was the food served in that tiffin box that made the love story so piquant as it becomes its own character, beginning to convey expressions and emotions of love thought thick, rich, indulgent foods. Mumbai-based chef Aesha Majithia was among many people on set of The Lunchbox to make sure the batata vada (deep-fried croquettes mixed with green chillies, ginger, garlic and fresh coriander), fish curries, creamy butter chicken and kheema (minced mutton curry with peas) looked honest, candid and true-to-life.
