We are delighted to welcome Mississippi Records founder Eric Isaacson for a visual and sonic presentation telling a story of global music scenes that both struggled and endeavoured throughout periods of authoritarianism.
It’s a timely and compelling interweaving of people, place, past and present, and making music in troubling times. It’s the story of powerful interests trying to control music and how people fight back. This event explores folk art champions and the exploitative nature of the mainstream music industry – all while drawing on Eric’s comical and colourful personal experiences of the fascist creep.
For seventeen years Mississippi Records operated with zero internet presence, released no digital music, and ran a cash only record store in Portland, Oregon. It became a true cult label – selling over one million records and helping (re)discover such artists as Michael Hurley, Emahoy Tsegué-Maryam Guèbrou, and The Space Lady.
