Three siblings return to the family home after the death of their mother. Practically estranged, they’re happy to go their separate ways once the funeral is done and dusted. The tables are turned however when a solicitor reveals that their mother altered her will prior to passing on, deciding to split her house between them instead of giving it solely to Thomas, who cared for her in later years.
They subsequently fall into an inheritance battle that turns bitter, absurd, and eventually deadly. Our House is the debut feature of writer & director Peter Young, a stalwart of the festival, and the talent seen in his previous short film work is here in full display. The film blends elements of dark comedy and thriller seamlessly, yet never neglecting the emotional core.
Despite the claustrophobic setting, we never feel boxed in. The central trio of Michael Shea, Hannah McClean and Andy Doherty are funny and devastating in star-making turns, fully embodying the sharp rapport between family who love & hate each other. The supporting cast is rounded out by Colin Connor, Kerri Quinn and Paddy Jenkins in a scene-stealing turn as an indignant taxi driver.
This confident and stylish debut is a testament to the wealth of talent in the North. After opening this year’s Galway Film Fleadh, we are thrilled to be hosting this hometown gala screening.
