The 24th Belfast Film Festival announces the winners of its 3rd International Film Competition!
The competition celebrates the most exciting new films from around the world that are a first or second feature. Sponsored by Yellowmoon Post Production, prizes were awarded to Best Film, alongside Jury Prizes for Outstanding Craft Contribution and Best Breakout Performance. The International Film Competition jury was led by the trailblazing filmmaker Radu Jude, alongside film curator and writer Dorota Lech and Irish filmmaker Dean Kavanagh.
Jury Statement
The jury would like to give the breakthrough performance award (best ensemble cast) to EEPHUS (dir. Carson Lund) for ‘being charming and ridiculous, and ridiculously charming’ – Dorota Lech
The jury would also like to highlight Orlin Ruevski with the outstanding craft award for cinematography for WINDLESS (dir. Pavel G. Vesnakov), ‘a film which is about light, faces, and spaces and the containment of them all in a motion picture film.’ – Dean Kavanagh
And last but not least, our award for Best International Film goes to THE BALLAD OF SUZANNE CÉSAIRE by Madeleine Hunt-Ehrlich.
‘We are in Belfast and a participant in the Troubles told us “We live in an eye-for-an-eye world, mate.” But actually this film shows us that another political model is possible, and shows us in an experimental, fragmentary way that reminds us of a quote of Bertolt Brecht, who used to say that only the fragment keeps the mark of authenticity. With this thought in mind we congratulate the director for a stunning debut film.” – Radu Jude
