In advance of our first Docs Ireland Marketplace on Thursday June 13th, Docs Ireland is delighted to offer an opportunity for filmmakers to develop their core skills in pitching and international co-production.
The DocMarket International Co-production Workshop will help producers and directors to advance their skills at pitching and financing a creative documentary aimed at an international market, and will cover the basics of how to pitch and how to navigate the (often strange) world of international co-production. It will also provides a great networking opportunity to meet with, and learn form, fellow producers and directors.
Topics covered during the workshop will include:
- An understanding of how international co-production works
- Where is the money? An overview of where you can go to finance your documentary (including overview of broadcasters, film funds, equity investment, tax breaks and the new kids on the block such as Netflix)
- The Pitch – How to Pitch your project successfully
- What Next? What happens after the pitch – what you can expect, and what you should be mindful of!

Trainer biographies:
Paul Pauwels
Before becoming the EDN Director Paul Pauwels was Managing Director for the Belgium production company Congoo bvba. Paul has a long track record of working with international documentary co-productions from both a commissioning and production point of view. He has been the managing director of the media academy ETMA, commissioning editor for the Belgium public service broadcaster VRT and has almost 30 years of experience with producing documentaries for the national and international market. In addition to these positions Paul Pauwels has been a tutor, moderator and expert at many European workshops and seminars, member of Eurovision Documentary Workgroup and one of the first Chairmen of EDN.
Andy Glynne
Andy is a triple-BAFTA award winning filmmaker, a producer and an author. Originally trained as a clinical psychologist, he went on to create the national documentary organisation, DFG – The Documentary Filmmakers Group – and now runs Mosaic Films, a multi-award winning production company. He’s also author of the book “Documentaries and How to Make Them”, as is currently writing “The Documentary Producers’ Handbookk” for Routledge. Andy is the former Chairman of the European Documentary Network, a trainer on many documentary and production courses both in the UK and overseas, and a consultant to numerous organisations and broadcasters around the world. He has produced and directed over 100 films, including both TV and theatrical documentaries, including the recent award-winning “Out of Thin Air” for Netflix and BBC. He has also gained a reputation for his significant output in the genre of animated documentaries – the latter which has won him numerous awards including 3 BAFTAs, a British Animation Award, two Royal Television Society Awards, a Mental Health Media Award.
