In this magical-realist portrait of patriarchy, a father living in rural Vietnam grows increasingly afraid for his 16-year-old son, Ngo, who has an intellectual disability.
As he faces his own mortality and the limits of what he can control, he becomes fixated on the idea that Ngo will never find a suitable wife, and that without a male heir, their family line will end. His worry turns into obsession, pushing him toward unusual and otherworldly methods to secure a bride for his son. Blending everyday rural life with surreal, imaginative visuals, the film explores care, tradition, and fear. It was banned soon after its release in Vietnam.
This screening is subtitled.
The screening will be introduced by Tuyết Vân Huỳnh from Star Nhà Ease, a nationwide film and contemporary arts programme bringing Vietnamese cinematic gems, music, poetry and beyond to UK audiences.
