Announcing the 14th Belfast Film Festival Short Film Competition Winner.

The winner of the 2014 Short Film Competition is the Irish Language short film Rúbaí.  The film was directed by Louise Ní Fhiannachta, written by Antoin Beag Ó Colla and produced by Magmedia.

The First Holy Communion, a bastion of Irish tradition and culture, is fast approaching and eight- year old Rúbaí flatly refuses to be a part of it.  She’s an atheist and proud of it. Rúbaí wants to stay true to who she is but faces emotional blackmail, religious and philosophical debate and out and out intolerance in today’s supposedly diverse and modern Ireland.

Films singled our for special commendations from the judging panel are The Bald World (Dir. Johnny Brew), Our Unfenced Country (Dir. Eric Dolan)  and The Last Fare (Dirs. Thomas Hefferon & Siobhan Perry).

Short Film Judges:  Prof. Sarah Edge, Photography & Cultural Studies, University of Ulster;  Maria McCourt, Belfast Media Group Editor; Jennifer Johnston, Into Film NI Manager.
